I have seen an alarming rise in sophisticated deepfake videos, fake accounts, and fraudulent "giveaway" scams using my likeness, my voice, and the logos of Tesla, SpaceX, and X. If you have interacted with one of these scams, received a message promising to "double your crypto," or paid a "participation fee" to someone claiming to be me or my team, you have been targeted by criminals.
Do not panic. Do not feel shame. You are not stupid—the scammers are evil, and they are getting better. But we are going to fight back.
Here is your immediate recovery and safety protocol:
1. IMMEDIATELY FREEZE YOUR ASSETS
- If you transferred cryptocurrency, that transaction is likely irreversible. However, act fast:
- Contact the exchange you used (e.g., Coinbase, Binance, Kraken). Report the wallet address you sent funds to. They may be able to flag or freeze the receiving wallet if enough users report it.
- If you used a credit card or PayPal, contact your bank immediately to dispute the charge. Time is critical.
2. REPORT THE SCAM (This helps everyone)
- Inside X: Use the Report feature on the scam post/profile. Select “Financial Scam” or “Impersonation.”
- Outside X: File a report with your local cybercrime unit (e.g., the FBI’s IC3 in the US, Action Fraud in the UK, or the ACSC in Australia).

3. THE HARD TRUTH: DO NOT SEND MORE MONEY
- I will never ask you to send crypto, pay a “gas fee,” or verify your wallet to receive a "refund."
- There is no official "Elon Musk Recovery Team." Anyone contacting you claiming to be my "legal team" offering to get your money back for a fee is a second-tier scammer. They are trying to double-victimize you.
4. CHANGE YOUR SECURITY IMMEDIATELY
- Enable 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) using an authenticator app (not SMS) on every account you own.
- Check the "Apps & Sessions" settings on X. Remove any unknown third-party apps that have access to your account.
I am working with our engineering and legal teams to build better detection for these deepfakes. We are pushing for legislation that punishes digital impersonation as severely as physical theft.
